This was nostalgic.

Before mercenary work, before sword possessions, before losing it all and before she earned it all back again.

Back when it just her and Nanna giggling as the two hosted Eyvel's sword overhead and stashed it in one of the cupboards.

Back when she could do whatever she wanted and laugh it off, and the other would let her.

It was empowering.

Super empowering.

"Tell your boss to provide some incentives if they want this blade getting your foe's sides instead~"

How many factions were there in the prank war?

No clue.

She would serve the highest bidder in this thing. She racked up some nice IOUs she planned to cash in when this all wound up done, and she got to get some fun stuff done. Win-win!

OK, what next...

Could she snatch up the training weapons and replace them with painted sticks?

Barely anything would change.

Eh, that means no harm.

Her 'perfect mercenary' status was probably being heavily undermined through this, but... fuck it. She already did this sort of stuff to her apprentices for practice in 'unexpected circumstances,' not too much different here, and this lets her keep an eye to make sure no one is injured doing this.

"...I can feel your gaze, you know. Need something from the Blade of Fiana?"

This could be a student seeking her out for actual school stuff, but there wasn't jack she was doing right now, and most of her students held it in an open secret.

She was having fun. Let her have this.

"If you're here for... current events, I suggest you make it worth my while. I was offered a week's worth of first dibs on dinner from the kitchen staff, so you're going to need to do better than that~"

...She was having way too much fun with this. But hey - getting in character was fun.

Liliana telling Imogen, "You know how much I miss just taking care of those horses? You know how much I dream of just walking the fields and making breakfast at sunrise? All that was taken from me" really brings to mind something that Laudna said to Imogen in episode 49:

"If you wish to have a quiet life in a cozy cottage in a field, raise horses and just be, no gods or fates or destiny can keep you from that."

That's the crux of why Liliana's argument fails to be convincing. Laudna is right--at any moment in this journey, Imogen could have decided she didn't need to do this and found a cottage to settle down in. At any point in 14-16 years of wandering Exandria before finding the Verity, Liliana could have gone home and had all the things she feels were "taken" from her. But she didn't, and that was her decision, not the fault of the gods, or Predathos, or any other force she thinks kept her away. She decided she needed answers more than that cozy life she loved so much. Foisting the responsibility of that decision does not erase that it was hers

we're rewatching only murders in the building to prep for the new season and mabel's mom is named silvia, apparently, and now I'm just kind of imagining an AU where guillermo de la cruz and mabel mora are siblings who never talk and therefore don't know that both of them are living secret lives that they'd both find fairly fascinating

(and obviously, guillermo's propensity for creating murder mysteries and mabel's propensity for solving them creates... friction)

and their increasingly exasperated mother, silvia, loves them both dearly but also what the fuck

[ CARRIAGE LINE ] - Those prone to vertigo might have elected to travel to Menja territory via carriage. All of them drop off at the same point before being taken by valets. With each one joining the procession, its occupants exiting, just who will pop out of their ride next? Some guests ogle the newcomers while others make a guessing game…

The ball was in full swing, which made the entrance courtyard all the better place to get away from rowdy guests. With students having all arrived, the area was deserted. Or at least, it should've been.

Hmmmm. Wasn't that...

"Hey! Aren't ya that house leader fella? Don't know if you've seen me around, but I'm Silvia! I'm one of your Deer!"

She holds no illusions that he would know who she is. Not a stellar student nor warrior, just another head in the sea of faces.

"Didya just get here? I've been meanin' to ask, what's with these bracelet thingies?" She shakes the string of turtle charms on her wrist for emphasis. They've been giving them out to everybody, but no one's told me what they're for."

It's a bit of a line before staff finds proper places at the stables for all the mounts that arrive, especially considering all their different species, sizes and shapes. Some horses are more scared of wyverns than others, some pegasi have larger wings and need more room, stuff like that. Claude isn't overly bored by the wait, of course; the night is yet young, even in spite of his late arrival, and he would never mind having more time to spend with Nadia.

Only after his wyvern friend is also comfortably situated, does he make his way towards the entrance - and there, he is stopped again, this time by the sound of a bubbly voice. Considering the content of the words, they must be meant for him. So he turns, greeting her with a smile.

"That House Leader fella would indeed be me," he responds to her inquiry, his voice equally casual as hers as he waves his hand lightly in greeting. "Silvia, was it? Nice to meet ya. Just call me Claude."

"... Oh, these?" He asks, the string of small pearls on his wrist glimmering faintly in the lights illuminating the entrance as he moves it. Grinning, he detaches one of them. "Well, there's five types of charms, and it's said you get a little special something as reward if you can gather all of them by the end of the ball. The Academy folks would tell you to use those to make connections, forge bonds and expand your horizons by meeting others..." He explains, exaggerating the phrases to something of a comical effect - as he extends his hand towards her, offering her the pearl. "In normal person language - just treat it as a little challenge and an encouragement to make some new friends."

With that, he shoots her a wink. "Hope you have a lovely evening! If you need anything, I'm usually not too difficult to find."

“It’s not going to last.”

Her eyes flicker off her phone screen for a second, eyebrow raising just a hint before they go back, typing a message. “Okay.”

“That’s all you have to say? Okay.”

“Well, you were a bit vague.” She draws out the last word, sighing. “So, yeah,” she nods, pausing. “Okay.”

The other huffs, shaking her head. “Charles and you, it’s never going to last. It was a good fling, a summer romance, but by next year you’ll be gone.”

Her lips thin and she pockets her phone, finally making eye contact with Silvia. “I’m more than aware that I don’t look like Charles’ past partners and that you have more than your fair share of issues with that and me. But Silvia, you don’t have to state the obvious. I’ve been aware.”

The older woman’s eyes are wide.

“It’s called enjoying something while it lasts and I intend to do so, enjoy this thing with Charles until it inevitably comes to end. Probably in the next month. We all know how you like him to be single going into the new year.”

Respect settles across Silvia’s face. “You are different than I thought.”

“Should’ve had a conversation with me.” She counters and Silvia concedes with a nod of her head. “Don’t worry, I’ll put out an insta story saying we parted on good terms and that things just don’t always work out. I’d say better as friends, but I think you’d kill me if I ever showed up in the garage again after this.”

“Just a bit.” Silvia then frowns. “You really knew this was never going to last? Between you and Charles?”

“Silvia,” And her tone softens for the first time. “It’s like I said. I’m aware of what I look like, especially compared to Charles and his exes. But it’s Charles, I would have been more stupid to say no to him and then to have him for at least a few months.”

Silvia holds her gaze for a few seconds before nodding and reaching forward, patting her hand. “It is a shame how you look. You would have made the perfect partner.”

And she doesn’t even flinch at the insult to her weight.

“Is everything okay?”

Her eyes are full of concern as she watches Charles move around the hotel room. His body tense, lips pressed together, jaw twitching.

His nostrils flare and she swears she can hear his teeth grinding.

“I overheard something, you and Silvia.” He fully turns to look at her and she’s unable to even get a second to mourn the loss of his side profile as she sees hurt in his eyes that’s surrounded by frustration.

“We aren’t going to last? I’m leaving you in the next month?”

“Charles,”

“No.” He shakes his head, cutting her off. “This is all news to me.”

“Is it?”

His head jerks back, “what?”

“We never talked about being serious, Charles. And you have a type, I’m so far away from that type it’s not even funny.”

“We never talked about being serious because every time I try to talk about our future you shut me down, you change the subject. And my type is you!” His voice is louder. “I know what my exes look like, I know my pattern, the jokes of how and why I date, but you are the most gorgeous woman in the world, as soon as I saw you, my type changed, I have no type, it is just you. It’s been seven months and I haven’t even looked at another woman.”

Her mind is struggling to process, her heart nearly beating out of her chest, her mouth slack with shock.

“You never tried talking about our future.” It’s all she can say because she can’t think of a single time he brought it up, he tried bringing it up.

“I tried asking you to come to lunch with my brothers and mom.”

Her eyes widened. “That was in July.”

“I asked about holiday plans, I asked about meeting your family. If you wanted kids, when you wanted them. And all I know is that you are going to family for two days for the holidays and that you want kids. That is all I got out of you. I tried giving you a key to my apartment.”

“I’m only ever in Monaco when I’m with you. Why would I ever need a key?”

He flushes, rubbing at the back of his neck. “This might be my bad, it was my way of asking you to move in, or just keep things at my place at least.”

“Charles.”

“I love you.”

Her heart skips a beat and all the hurt and frustration that had been on Charles’ face is gone, replaced by something she’s never seen directed at her.

“I’m crazy in love with you. And obviously we both need to work on things, talking, but I want to do that. I want you. I want you to move in with me, to continue going to all my races, to chide Leo before cuddling him. I want to marry you. In a day, a week, a month, a year, I don’t care when. And I want children with you. I want them to have your smile, your laugh, your stubbornness even though it infuriates me.”

Tears are spilling down her cheeks, lip trembling, and she nearly can’t speak.

“Charles, I want you too. I want all of that. I love you.”

He’s striding forward, his hands gentle on her face as he steals the breath from her lips.

They’ve shared many kisses in the seven months since they’ve known each other, but none like this.

“We are never breaking up.” Charles states when he pulls away after brushing their lips together once more.

“Never.” She agrees, a rush of excitement flooding her as she realizes that she gets to have this, have him, and never give him up.

He smiles at the answer, at the happiness that has flooded her face, the tension he didn’t even know was there that has left her body. “Now, when would you like to get married? I think I have a favor or two I could call to get us married tomorrow if you’d like.”

“Charles,” She shakes her head.

“What?”

“Take me to bed.”

His eyes widen for a brief second and then a smirk plays on his lips. “Happily, amour.”

Writing a "Curious" Character

Curiosity - the impulse or desire to investigate, observe, or gather information, particularly when the material is novel or interesting.

This drive appears spontaneously in nonhuman animals and in young children, who use sensory exploration and motor manipulation to inspect, bite, handle, taste, or smell practically everything in the immediate environment.

The Five-Dimensional Model of Curiosity

Deprivation sensitivity—recognizing a gap in knowledge the filling of which offers relief. This type of curiosity doesn’t necessarily feel good, but people who experience it work relentlessly to solve problems. This dimension was derived from Berlyne and Loewenstein’s work.

Joyous exploration—being consumed with wonder about the fascinating features of the world. This is a pleasurable state; people in it seem to possess a joie de vivre. This dimension was influenced by Deci’s research.

Social curiosity—talking, listening, and observing others to learn what they are thinking and doing. Human beings are inherently social animals, and the most effective and efficient way to determine whether someone is friend or foe is to gain information. Some may even snoop, eavesdrop, or gossip to do so. This dimension stems from Renner’s research.

Stress tolerance—a willingness to accept and even harness the anxiety associated with novelty. People lacking this ability see information gaps, experience wonder, and are interested in others but are unlikely to step forward and explore. This dimension builds on recent work by Paul Silvia, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Thrill seeking—being willing to take physical, social, and financial risks to acquire varied, complex, and intense experiences. For people with this capacity, the anxiety of confronting novelty is something to be amplified, not reduced. This dimension was inspired by Zuckerman's work.

The researchers conducted surveys across the United States to discover which of the dimensions lead to the best outcomes and generate particular benefits.

For instance, joyous exploration has the strongest link with the experience of intense positive emotions.

Stress tolerance has the strongest link with satisfying the need to feel competent, autonomous, and that one belongs.

Social curiosity has the strongest link with being a kind, generous, modest person.

They also explored attitudes toward and expressions of work-related curiosity.

In a survey of 3,000 workers in China, Germany, and the United States, they found that 84% believe that curiosity catalyzes new ideas, 74% think it inspires unique, valuable talents, and 63% think it helps one get promoted.

In other studies across diverse units and geographies, they have found evidence that 4 of the dimensions—joyous exploration, deprivation sensitivity, stress tolerance, and social curiosity—improve work outcomes.

The latter two seem to be particularly important: Without the ability to tolerate stress, employees are less likely to seek challenges and resources and to voice dissent and are more likely to feel enervated and to disengage.

And socially curious employees are better than others at resolving conflicts with colleagues, more likely to receive social support, and more effective at building connections, trust, and commitment on their teams.

People or groups high in both dimensions are more innovative and creative.

A monolithic view of curiosity is insufficient to understand how that quality drives success and fulfillment in work and life. To discover and leverage talent and to form groups that are greater than the sum of their parts, a more nuanced approach is needed.

Psychologists have compiled a large body of research on the many benefits of curiosity:

It enhances intelligence: In one study, highly curious children aged three to 11 improved their intelligence test scores by 12 points more than their least-curious counterparts did.

It increases perseverance, or grit: Merely describing a day when you felt curious has been shown to boost mental and physical energy by 20% more than recounting a time of profound happiness.

And curiosity propels us toward deeper engagement, superior performance, and more-meaningful goals: Psychology students who felt more curious than others during their first class enjoyed lectures more, got higher final grades, and subsequently enrolled in more courses in the discipline.

Since the 1950s psychologists have offered competing theories about what makes one person more curious than another. Rather than regard curiosity as a single trait, we can now break it down into five distinct dimensions. Instead of asking, “How curious are you?” we can ask, “How are you curious?”

But those people already have the connections, the networks, the personnel. The best thing you can do for them? Give them money. They know how to best leverage it in the way that you don't.

It can be five dollars a month. ONE dollar a month. Whatever you can spare. But whatever it is, make it a monthly automatic payment. That way they know they can depend on it.

We are often urged to "do something" in the face of despair. I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be knocking on doors or marching in protests or writing postcards. It can be those things - doing something concrete can provide a lot of satisfaction - but tbh one of the most effective ways to participate in activism is to financially support the professionals. And you can magnify this work by sharing links, spreading news, and urging others to donate, too.
